Boat Licensing and Training
In the state of Queensland, to operate a boat powered by an engine greater than 6HP, you will need to obtain a recreational boat license, and to operate a jet ski you need a personal watercraft license.
Causeway Lake Boat Hire provides BoatSafe-approved marine driver courses through Allstate Boat Licensing, the first boat licensing organisation in to be granted approval under the BoatSafe standard from the Maritime Safety Queensland. The courses are conducted by Matt in our safe and enjoyable purpose-built training vessel. Courses are run at the following locations at various times:
- Causeway Lake (most days)
- Gladstone,
- Biloela,
- Emerald,
- Longreach,
- Clermont, and
- Stanage Bay

The course consists of theroretical tuition and practical instruction on the boat and jetski, plus you will receive a comprehensive training manual for future reference. The major topics of the course include:
- General safety obligations
- QLD Marine regulations
- Collision aviodance regulations
- Trip planning and vessel preparation
- Safety and emergency euipment usage
- IALA bouyage system A
- Weather charts and tide tables
- Heavy weather handling and bar crossing
- Engine and vessel maintenance
- Navigation and chart work
- Manoeuvring and anchoring
- Marine radios and basic knots

Large groups, schools and clubs can also be accommodated with multiple qualified instructors available if required.
Of course, if you would rather have somebody else worry about piloting the boat, leaving you to relax and fish the day away, we can also hire out skippers (subject to availability). Please contact us for more information.
Course participation results in the issue of a "Certificate of Completion", and when presented to a Queensland Transport customer service centre, a "Recreational Ship Masters License" can be issued.
